The Ocean Bill of Lading (Ocean BOL) is a critical document in maritime shipping, used when goods are transported by sea under Dutch jurisdiction. It is required whenever goods are shipped internationally by ocean freight and serves as both a receipt and a title document. The Ocean BOL must comply with Dutch law, particularly Book 8 of the Dutch Civil Code and international maritime conventions ratified by the Netherlands. It includes essential information such as the identity of the carrier, shipper, and consignee; detailed description of the goods; vessel details; and terms of carriage. This document is particularly important for international trade financing as banks often require an original BOL as part of documentary credit transactions. The Ocean BOL can be issued as a 'straight' bill (naming a specific consignee) or as an 'order' bill (making it negotiable), providing flexibility in international trade transactions.
